How to Play Neon Horde
Controls
Move with WASD or the arrow keys, or drag anywhere on screen on a phone or tablet. There is no separate aim input: your gun always fires the way you are moving, so every step you take is also a shot. Stop moving and you keep firing in your last direction. Press Space (or the on-screen DASH button) to dash — a short burst that carries you through a pack and leaves you briefly untouchable.
Tips
- Your aim is your movement, so running away is also shooting. Backing off from a cluster while firing into it is the single most useful habit in the game.
- Never stop in the open. Standing still keeps your line of fire frozen while zombies keep closing — circle instead of parking.
- Dash is an escape, not a travel tool. It gives you about a quarter of a second of immunity, which is exactly enough to cross a wall of bodies you cannot shoot through.
- Spitters keep their distance and lob acid. Break line of sight by moving through the horde rather than backing away, or they will chip you down from the edge of the screen.
- Every level offers three upgrades and you only keep one. Split Barrel and AP Rounds turn a single line of fire into a screen-wide spray, which is the fastest way to stop getting surrounded.
- The horde counter climbs on its own. When a fresh cluster pours in from one edge, move along that edge instead of straight back — the entrance is always the thinnest part of the crowd.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Neon Horde free to play?
Yes. It is completely free, runs in your browser and needs no signup, download or install.
Can I play it on a phone or tablet?
Yes. It is built with HTML5 canvas and uses touch controls: drag anywhere to move and aim, and tap the on-screen DASH button to dash. The arena scales to both portrait and landscape screens.
How long does a run last?
Most runs last between one and three minutes. The first horde pours in at around the forty-second mark and then every forty seconds after that, and the crowd only gets thicker, so the pressure is designed to eventually overwhelm you. The score is survival plus kills, and your best run is stored on your device.
Do I need to download or install anything?
No. The whole game is a single page that loads instantly in a modern browser, on desktop and mobile alike.
Who made Neon Horde?
It is an original game developed in-house for 8204.me. Every sprite is drawn procedurally in code and all sound is synthesised at runtime — no third-party assets are used.
